Kayaking

Now that the weather is warming up and the waters are starting to boast with life, many people are gearing up for kayaking adventures. Whether you kayak for recreation, fishing, or hunting purposes, there is a special kayak just for you! I'm going to go over the types of kayaks available and some of the best places to enjoy kayaking in Ohio.

Kayak Styles

The two most common types of kayaks are sit-on-tops or sit-inside. Sit-on-tops are the most user friendly because they are more stable and easier to get in and out of. They also are self-bailing, meaning that the water drains through the small holes of the kayak. Sit-inside kayaks are great for paddlers who find themselves in colder waters and want to stay dry while on their kayaking trip. These kayaks also move faster, which more experienced kayakers enjoy. The only downside of these kayaks is if you happen to flip, recovering isn't an easy task because the kayak will swamp.

After deciding on which version of kayak is best for you, there are several other options to choose from. The length of your kayak is important because long narrow kayaks travel fast, but wide kayaks are more stable. Consider your skill level when picking speed over stability.

Kayaks can be broken down into categories, such as recreational, touring, fishing, tandem, and inflatable. Recreational are wider and best for beginners, while Touring kayaks are designed to be fast and handle any situation. They are a lot less stable, and suitable for more experienced kayakers. Fishing kayaks come with a variety of features specified for the avid fisherman. Some of the features include rod holders, additional storage, and mounts for electronic devices. Tandem kayaks are for those who prefer to share a ride, as they are double-seater kayaks. Preferably used on calm waters to help manage the challenges presented with two people in one vessel. Lastly, we have the inflatable kayak. Used mostly by novice kayakers or people who don't kayak often, the inflatable kayak is the most common. It offers easy storage and transport.

Hocking Hills

Locator Call Hocking Hills Kayaking

The Hocking River is the most popular spot in Hocking Hills to kayak. It has more than 50 miles of accessible water and slow currents. You can go on your own adventure, or join one of the guided tours that are offered. This is one of my favorite places to go with the family to see different views of the caves and waterfalls that we see when we hike. However, if you prefer to kayak on a lake, Lake Hope or Lake Logan are wonderful choices as well. If you don't own a kayak, no worries! You can find rentals throughout the area.

Cowan Lake State Park

One of the best places to take your family kayaking is at the Cowan Lake State Park. Once used as a stronghold in numerous battles for the Miami and Shawnee Native Americans, the history here is impressive. The 500-million-year-old rocks and fossils preserve ancient, long-lost plants and animals and makes this place so fun to explore. When kayaking this 692-acre lake, you'll be making memories you won't soon forget! The park also provides rentals if you need them.

Little Miami River

The Little Miami River is one of the best places for spotting wildlife and tackling mild whitewater rapids. This river is undoubtedly among the most important historical areas in Ohio, rich in Miami Tribe history. With 85 miles of winding waters, you have many scenic opportunities. I enjoy going through the week when it's not as crowded. That is when I find it most exciting, as I can enjoy the wildlife and beautiful scenery in peace.

Great Miami River

If you're more interested in a slow and steady pace, might I suggest the Great Miami River. Its waters flow calmly for about 160 miles and because of that, many guided tours are offered. Here you can enjoy the serene sights of wildlife.

Mohican River Water Trail

Known for its slow-moving waters, Mohican River Water Trail is best for novice kayakers. You can enjoy a relaxing day basking in the sun while paddling down this 40-mile stretch of river. This river is also popular for fishing and camping, and is an excellent place for a family to get away.

Now, I know there are so many other wonderful places here in Ohio where you can do some great kayaking. These are just some of my favorites. I would love to hear about some of your favorite spots for my next kayaking adventure in the comments below. Make sure to stop at one of our Hebron, Lebanon, or Obetz locations to check out our new line of Old Town and Hobie kayaks. We offer a range of options perfect for all kayakers. I hope this gets you excited to get out on the water and spend some time in nature.
