I was looking for a compact weapon for personal defense and test fired the M&P 40 Shield and the M&P 40 Compact. I found that the two felt the same when shooting them even though the Shield is a smaller framed weapon. The Shield was thinner, measuring at .95” in width and the Compact at 1.2” difference in width. The lengths of the barrels are .4” in difference. The Shield was comfortable in the hand just as was the Compact model. I chose the M&P 40 Compact over the Shield because of capacity. I ended up renting the M&P 40 Compact and pushed 50 rounds through and was satisfied with my decision to invest in this weapon. The M&P 40 Compact capacity is 10+1 and the M&P 40 Shield comes with a six and a seven round magazine. I will carry the M&P 40 Compact inside the waist band or outside of the belt. YOU need to be the one to decide what is more important to you when it comes to a weapon for defense. Good luck and be safe.
